 Hanging around
« Thread Started on May 16, 2009, 2:47am »

Fenris jawned and put his feet up on a pile of rubble. Why hadn't he ever considered climbing these old ruined buildings before? It was the perfect place to enjoy the sun at noon... He put his hands behind his head and smiled. He looked down from where he was sitting - this had probably been a window once, he decided, but now the house was so dilapidated and run down that the entire roof had fallen in and taken pretty much every part of the upper stories of the house with it. The window itself was gone, so there was only cold stone here now, piles of rubbish and some old curtains that were so rotten they fell apart at first touch. But it was nice. Niiiice. He closed his eyes and let the warmth fill him, caress his skin. Night- time and war was a long way away; this was bliss.

((introducing...*drumroll* Atticus. You can find his profile in my signature. Also, since these two are in the same army, I assume that they do know each other to a degree, even though we've never RPed them together before.))

Atticus had never been the night owl that many of his brethren were. Thus the werewolf found himself walking alone at noon, gently kicking bits of rubble out of his way and thinking dryly of how it had been when he'd first touched down on the shores of Paradise Circle. The demons had been there then of course, but that was before all the destruction, when the grass was still lush and the water still fair and blue. There had still been buildings then. Not anymore. Not really. Now all that remained were werewolves and vampires and a few savage humans who could probably never again exist in society. If there was any society left, that was. He never heard from their brothers across the seas. How the war was going outside of Demon's Circle (or if it was even still going at all) was an utter mystery. Sometimes he even wondered vaguely if the others had forgotten about them entirely. Sometimes he thought that maybe...just maybe...they were all here fighting (and dying) in a war that no longer existed.

Speaking of which, he caught a faint scent on the afternoon breeze. Sniffing at the warm air, he followed his nose and turned his face to the sky. There, perched upon a pile of rubble, was young Fenris.

"Hey there boss!" The New York drawl (one he'd never quite gotten rid of despite his casual attempts at it) rang clearly in through the hot, quiet air. He smiled a little despite himself. The werewolf still wasn't sure whether he really considered the youth their leader. But he was not stupid or overly blood thirsty like some of their kin, nor was he helpless. And so many had come and gone. Bloodstain was dead. Miko was gone. Miko had wanted Fenris to take over and so, because at the moment there was no one else, Atticus, the eternal lamb, called him boss. It seemed fitting enough, anyway. Even if the boy was half his age.

Putting his hands in his pockets, he walked casually up to the side of the building and craned his neck, trying to get a better look without actually having to climb up there. "Not the best place to be dozing off all alone, is it Fen? Fuckin' vampires all over the place lately. And I bet the humans didn't take too kindly to us blowing their base to kingdom come."

Fenris smiled as he heard Atticus shout up at him.

"Hey there boss!"

He opened his eyes and lifted his hand from behind his head in a nonchalant wave. "'Ello, Atticus," he grinned. He really liked this guy. Hadn't had the opportunity to talk to him that much, but he still enjoyed chatting with him whenever he got the chance. It wasn't as if Fenris had spent much of his time at the Hotel lately anyway.

"Not the best place to be dozing off all alone, is it Fen? Fuckin' vampires all over the place lately. And I bet the humans didn't take too kindly to us blowing their base to kingdom come."

Fenris barked a short laugh. "Vampires? In the noon sun? Dude, you must be kiddin' me. Their eyes'd burn like fried bacon in no time. And anyway, I'd probably hear them, you know. I'd be more worried if they could actually turn into bats or something." He grabbed hold of the stone wall opposite of him and hoisted himself onto his feet before starting to climb down. He felt it would be impossibly rude to stay up where he was while talking to Atticus. And anyway, he was aware that there were people here who did walk outside during daylight. He just didn't feel like attracting trouble. His head popped out of a window above Atticus' head.

"Nice day, isn't it?" he remarked. "So, how're ya doing? Haven't seen you around for Heavens know how long." Fenris grinned again and disappeared, only to jump out of another hole just down the dusty corridor that lead out on another pile of rubble from which he could climb down onto the ground. He dusted himself off as he got onto steady ground again and got his hair out of his face.

((Sorry it's short, but I figured it's better than nothing))

((Meh, I actually think that's a goodish length. I used to post like 2-3 pages every post, but then I realized it was a little more fun to do a solid 2-6 paragraphs, depending on what is going on. Quality, not quantity))

Atticus watched as the agile youth easily climbed down from his perch. He did this with only a vague amount of jealously and none of it visible. Atticus had some of the abilities granted to him by his blood, but he would never have the grace that some of his younger counterparts had. For example, if that had been him climbing down that pile of rubble, he would have ended on his face with a nice mouthful of tasty stones. Nom nom nom. He simultaenously smiled and grimanced at the image in his own head as he stepped closer to Fenris and habitually glanced over him.

"You might've heard them," said the older wolf lightly. "Your ears are better than mine. Still..." He folded his hands behind his back to keep from fidgeting and turned on his heel, glancing up at the ramparts with uncertain eyes, "I don't think I wanna be losing you, Fen. You're sorta like the only guy on this island who doesn't make me wanna hurl myself from the peak of Rose Tower."

That might have been putting it a bit harsh. There were (or had been) some tolerable werewolves. But most of them were gone now. All that remained were a few freshly turned whelps and an annoying power-hungry elder here and there. The werewolf numbers (as well as the vampire and human numbers) were waning. He thought that maybe the island was finally dying. Would anyone care?

He looked over his shoulder and offered Fenris a dry smile in response to his second question. "N'such thing as a nice day, boss. Not in this place. Just days less bad than others."

Atticus couldn't help his mood. He was a bitter old man.

((Okay =) *giggles* Nom nom nom... that's easily the funniest post I've read here in a long time. ;D))

Fenris raised his eyebrows questioningly as he listened to his companion.

"I don't think I wanna be losing you, Fen. You're sorta like the only guy on this island who doesn't make me wanna hurl myself from the peak of Rose Tower. N'such thing as a nice day, boss. Not in this place. Just days less bad than others."

"Oh, come on now, it can't be that bad..." Fenris attempted one of his friendly grins at him. "There's sun, it's unusually peaceful, listen, even the birds are singing...!" Indeed, there was a bird singing faintly somewhere a good distance away. Fenris put an hand on Atticus' shoulder as an amicable gesture as he tried to cheer him up. "I must admit, I can't say I'm able to compare this to anything else, being born here and all, in all this mess, but... Who can say what's become of the mainland nowadays anyway?" He stopped for a moment, and smiled to himself. "I've always wondered, of course..." he mused, a faraway look in his eyes. What would it be like to live somewhere else? As a youngster he'd always daydreamt about what it would be like to sneak aboard one of the ferries and see the world. If there was any world left to see, his adult mind supplemented. But - all those things he'd only heard faint stories of - the theatres on Broad Way, whatever that was, India - "Your one- way ticket to Paradise!" (he still couldn't believe there could be such a place as the thing he had seen in the old magazine he had found) - The Tower of Pisa...

((rocks are delicious

Guess how many times it too to spell delicious? That's right...

...TOO MANY!))

Having spent his entire childhood and a large chunk of his adult life on mainland (before the start of the war), Atticus was perfectly aware of what it had been like. It was Heaven compared to this hellhole, though he seriously doubted that was still the case. "The world had moved on," as it said in Atticus's favorite book, "The Gunslinger", by Stephen King. That had applied to the world of Roland Deschain and now it applied to his own. As a teenager, reading the book, he had always imagined he knew what that meant -all that about the world "moving on". But he had never truly understood it until he hunkered on the ramparts an abandoned building and stared across the bleak, moon-bathed desolation of the wretched island he now inhabited.

The world had moved on.

Yeah, he got it.

Was it still moving?

Smiling feebly down at the other werewolf, he attempted to cheer up for sake of him. All this depression was hardly helping anything. "It could be worse, I suppose. I could still be human." Now, THERE was a fate worthy of loathing. "Or worse, a fuckin' vampire." He gave an over-dramatic shudder and cringed. "Ick."

Shrugging Fen's hand off his shoulder (not in a mean way, just in a very general one), the werewolf started down the rubble-strewn street at a casual stroll. His toes had automatically turned toward the Howling Hotel, not because he liked the military feel of it, but because it was genuinely safe. "Don't suppose you'd wanna escort me back home, boss? Streets aren't real safe for us non-combative types. And by "us", I mean namely "me"."

((lol... I've been combating writer's block after finishing my exams, so, sorry to hold up any action :P Really, really tired.))

Fenris shook himself free of his unbidden daydreams and looked around them again, just in case anybody was there. He couldn't smell anyone, but that didn't mean they couldn't be there. Shrugging it off, he turned his attention to Atticus.

"It could be worse, I suppose. I could still be human. Or worse, a fuckin' vampire. Ick."

Fenris laughed. "Always the funnyman, huh?" He grinned.

"Don't suppose you'd wanna escort me back home, boss? Streets aren't real safe for us non-combative types. And by "us", I mean namely "me"."

"Yeah sure, I guess it's a good idea. But just to let you know the facts here, mate, I would reckon myself among those non- combative types on a regular basis as well. I only fight back, and only if I really have to. And I fucking *hate* Turning. Just so that you don't expect some superhero fighting here." He looked dead serious, before breaking out into a boyish grin. "Come on, so the boogeymen won't get you." He laughed and started to walk back slowly toward the Hotel.
